A Decade of Organizing. A Lifetime of Purpose.
Chas Moore grew up in Houston, Texas, raised by his grandparents after losing his mother at age seven. That early exposure to grief, survival, and a system that too often fails Black families shaped the person he became and the work he would build.
He arrived at the University of Texas at Austin and never stopped organizing. In 2015, he founded the Austin Justice Coalition, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Black, Brown, and low-income Austinites through advocacy, community building, and direct political pressure.
"Find your hammer. Find your chisel. And chip away."
His organizing helped produce Austin's largest Black Lives Matter march, drawing over 10,000 people and resulting in a landmark city budget reallocation that moved millions of dollars away from policing and toward community health and public safety alternatives. That work became a model cited nationally.
On October 29, 2022, Mayor Steve Adler proclaimed it Chas Moore Day in Austin and awarded him the Key to the City for a decade of transformative work.
